BMC will sack contractors if city’s pay-and-use toilets stink

- SAGAR PILLAI

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to sack pay-and-use toilet contractors if they fail to keep the public loos clean and odour-free.

The move comes after BMC’s survey of public toilets found that 83% of Mumbaikars were not happy with the maintenance of loos in the city.

The survey, to find how clean Mumbai’s pay-and-use toilets are, was conducted from December 1, 2016 to April 27, 2017. Across the city, 89 lakh users voted on 54 toilets. The BMC had placed voting machines at each of these toilets. A user had to cast his or her vote by pressing any one of three buttons: clean, unclean or ok.

The civic body is now planning to install machines in 8,000 more toilets.

According to the BMC, Sarvalok

Vikas Seva Mandal toilet at Kandivali was rated as the most unclean by users.

The civic body has already served notices to the contractors of 10 toilets. An official said the contractors who fail to maintain the toilets properly have their contracts cancelled. “We have received a good response from the pilot project and we are planning to cover all toilets in the city.

The contractors turn slack and have a lethargic attitude towards cleaning the loos. This initiative will help to make the city cleaner.”

The official added that they would soon come up with the results of toilets that got maximum negative marks. The civic body has already cancelled the contract of the operator managing the toilet at Gateway of India.
