Legal fraternity hails SC ruling on Justice Karnan

- NARSI BENWAL

The Supreme Court’s “landmark” decision to put an end to the “contemptuous” act of the sitting judge of Calcutta High Court is being applauded by the legal fraternity in Mumbai. The legal fraternity has appreciated the SC ruling wherein it sentenced Justice CS Karnan (59) for six months on Tuesday.

The more than a monthlong controversy of Justice Karnan claiming to be a victim of judiciary owing to his “caste” has been highly criticised by former judges and senior advocates. While speaking to the Free Press Journal, former judge, Justice VG Palshikar said, “The Calcutta judge (Justice Karnan) had gone berserk and was out of his mind. The apex court has rightly convicted and sentenced him as such people must be dealt with strictness.”

“Everyone should support this verdict of the apex court as he (Justice Karnan) had made mockery of the judiciary by his acts,” Justice Palshikar added.

Noted senior advocate Shreehari Aney also appreciated the ruling but also maintained that this “issue” could have been handled more carefully. He said, “Though I appreciate the SC’s orders as the judge’s act amounted to contempt of court but I personally feel that this issue could have been handled much better from both the sides (SC as well as Justice Karnan). I think this issue could have been resolved internally as an in-house crisis.”
