Accidents claim 2 lives

A pillion rider of a motorcycle was flung off Ghatkopar bridge and died in the accident on Monday on Eastern Express Highway. The accident occurred after a taxi suddenly applied brakes that led to a three-way collision at midnight. The person in a Honda City car behind the taxi could not apply the brakes in time and dashed into it from the rear.

A motorcycli­st who was behind the Honda City had even lesser time to figure out the scene ahead and hit the Honda car. The impact of the three-way accident was severe in which the biker and the pillion rider were flung off the motorcycle.

“The pillion rider, Hashim Shaikh, 25, fell 25 feet below the Ghatkopar bridge and hit the ground, whereas the biker Fareed Shaikh, 24, luckily got caught on the railing of the bridge,” said an officer from Pantnagar police station.

Hashim was taken to Rajawadi hospital where he was declared dead before admission. Fareed has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Godrej Hospital. His is unconsciou­s, and is said to be critical.

“The bikers were on the way to attend a housewarmi­ng party of one of their friends. Both are residents of Tagore Nagar Vikhroli (east). We have seized all the three vehicles and are investigat­ing the matter,” said the officer.

The Pantnagar police have registered the accident case against unknown person.

In another accident, a 52year-old man died after he was hit by a garbage dumper of Brihanmumb­ai Municipal Corporatio­n in Sion-Koliwada area. The deceased has been identified as Arumugem Naiker who is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.

“My father was returning after having tea from a shop near Panchwati Bakery. He was hit by the truck and his head got crushed by its rear wheel,” said Chitra, daughter of Naiker.

Ghatkopar police have arrested the driver, Ajit Ramchandra Yadav, 30, and are investigat­ing the matter.
