- STAFF REPORTER

Chief minister Nitish Kumar on Monday took strong objection to the action of some police officers of Patna and Vaishali districts who disposed of 15,000 litres of liquor in Ganga river on May 13.

Nitish said strong action will be taken against the officers concerned of both police and excise departments who had disposed off the liquor in the holy river. He said on the one hand, measures are being taken to keep Ganga pollution free, on the other hand, officials are discharging seized liquor into the Ganga. Officers, he said are expected to destroy liquor kept in the police stations and not to put them into the Ganga or any other river.

Officers of Deedarganj, Gai Ghat police stations had disposed off 15,000 litres of liquor and containers in the river during May 13 night.

The CM had issued instructions to destroy liquor kept in the police stations following reports that rats had consumed 9,00,000 litres of liquor stored in the stations and recovered from liquor traders. He had expressed his surprise over police officers claim that rats consumed liquor and held an emergency video conference with all DMs and SPs and directed them to destroy liquor kept in police stations as he suspected the police officers were themselves consuming the liquor.

Bulldozers were used to destroy liquor at different places in the state, but in the latest incident, liquor was dumped into the Ganga river by police officers led by an Additional SP of Patna City.

Meanwhile, a PIL was filed in the Patna High Court by a lawyer, Manibhushan Sengar, seeking directive to the state government to take action against the officers of Patna and Vaishali districts for polluting Ganga by throwing liquor into the river.
