An Indian national has been arrested by Margalla police in Islamabad for not carrying proper travel documents.

The Indian identified Sheikh Nabi Ahmed is a Mumbai-based businessman and resides in Jogeshwari (East) here with his family.

The address on Ahmed’s passport is written as Jogeshwari (East) but when the Free Press Journal reached there it was learnt that Ahmed sold his property almost five years ago and has now shifted his base to Behrampada in Jogeshwari (West).

Mumbai Police spokesperson Dr. Rashmi Karandikar told the Free Press Journal that “it is the matter of Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)” and cannot comment.

He was arrested from F-8, Nizamuddin Road, Islamabad as he looked like a ‘foreigner’. “Ahmed failed to show relevant documents to the local police,” reads the FIR registered in Islamabad.

An official of the Indian High Commission, however, said it does not have any information about the arrest so far.

Sources said Ahmed had gone to Pakistan to meet his relatives but was reportedly detained on May 19. He has now been sent to 14-day judicial custody after he was booked under the Foreigners’ Act, 1946. Police have also obtained 14 days judicial remand through a magistrate.

His arrest came days after the International Court of Justice stayed the execution of Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav, who was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court.
