18 MBMC engineers fail to clear mandated professional exams

- SURESH GOLANI

In a shocking revelation, 11 out of the 18 engineers attached to the various departments of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) have failed to clear the mandated professional examinations conducted by the Nashik based-Maharashtra Engineering Training Academy (META) to prove their worth for promotions.

Interestingly all the unsuccessful examinees have failed to clear the oral tests which has not only casted a shadow on the authenticity of the entire process, but has also raised a serious question mark on the technical efficiency of the civic administration. The engineers are considered as the strength behind various developmental and maintenance work to provide basic facilities to citizens.

Eighteen-odd in service personnel including 17 junior engineers and a deputy engineer from departments including Public Works, Town Planning and Water Supply had appeared for the examinations in November last year. This following orders passed by former civic chief Achyut Hange with-holding increments of the technical staff who were yet to clear the mandated examinations which are conducted in accordance with the provisions laid down in the Public Works manual.

While the municipal corridors is abuzz with the surprising results, a section of failed engineers alleging partiality have geared up to seek judicial intervention into the matter. It has been alleged apart from a few stray cases, most of the higher-ups in technical department have been unlawfully promoted and are drawing salaries much above to their actual entitlement.

A junior engineer needs to give the exam to get the promotion and reach the level of sub-engineer, and a sub-engineer needs to pass it to become an deputy engineer, and so on.
