Shviya stars in Chembur YMCA’s win

MUMBAI: Chembur YMCA upset favourites Indian Gymkhana 34-30 in extra-time, in the girls under-18 quarterfin­als of the 125th YMCA Open Basketball Tournament. Trailing 12-17 at the end of the third quarter, after leading 98 at half-time, Chembur YMCA initiated a dramatic turnaround to fashion an exciting win. After battling hard to keep their hopes alive, Chembur closed in at 22-26, 25 seconds from the end when the industriou­s Gauri Babar scored and Shviya Shetty equalised to force the match into-extra-time. Top scorer Shetty made the most of four free throws and a basket in extra time to give Chembur a surprise 32-28 advantage and Babar fired home with 10 seconds remaining to make it safe. In other thrilling encounters, Borivali YMCA overcame Indian Gymkhana 58-50 in the boys under-18 quarter-finals, while Marvel Games snatched a tight 32-28 win over Hi-5 Ghatkopar YMCA in the boys’ under-16 pre-quarter-finals.
