Freunds SC, Rebels SC emerge champions

Freunds SC and Rebels SC emerged champions winning the women’s crown and men veteran’s title respective­ly in the Earnest John Group of Companies sponsored Mount Carmel Invitation rink hockey tournament 2017, which is being co-sponored by Bank of India and Chennaiyan FC and organized by the Carmel Sports Committee.

Putting up a dogged display, Freunds SC shot down fancied Central Railway 6-5 via the sudden death tie-breaker in the women’s final, played under floodlight­s at the Mount Carmel Church compound. The match finished in an exciting 3-3 draw.

In the veteran’s summit clash, Rebels showed superb fighting spirit as they rallied from a 0-3 deficit to overcome formidable Dreamliner­s SC 8-7 also via the sudden death penalty shootout.

Freunds SC scored their goals through Mamta Pasi (2), Madhu Patil (2) and Bhagyashre­e Agarwal (2), while Central Railway scorers were Jameela Bano (2), Pratiba (1) and Kavita (2).

Nute S. of Freunds was declared ‘Player of the Final’, while her teammate Mamta Pasi was named ‘Player of the Tournament’. Madhu Patil of Freunds and Vallakhi Dalvi of Sea View won the ‘Most Promising Player’ and ‘Best Goalkeeper’ awards respective­ly.

Freunds and Rebels, both received a crystal ‘Champions’ trophy and a cash award, from Rev. FR. Reuben Tellis, Parish Priest, Mount Carmel Church.

Women’s Open (first round): Freunds SC 6 (Mamta Pasi 2, Madhu Patil 2, Bhagyashre­e Agarwal 2) beat Central Railway 5 (Jameela Bano 2, Pratiba 1, Kavita 2) via the sudden death tie-breaker. Full-time 3-3.

Individual awards – Player of the Final: Nute S. (Freunds); Player of the Tournament: Mamta Pasi (Freunds); Most Promising Player: Madhu Patil (Freunds); Best Goalkeeper: Vallakhi Dalvi (Sea View).

Men’s Veterans (finals): Rebels SC 8 (Enrico Fernandes 3, Solomon Alexendra 2, Meghraj S. 2, Madan Vishwanath­an 1) beat Dreamliner­s SC 7 (Darryl D’Souza 3, Gavin Fereira 2, Cornelius D’Costa 1, Dasvid Cardoza 1) via the sudden death tie-breaker. Fulltime 4-4. Individual awards – Player of the Final: Darryl D’Souza (Dreamliner­s); Player of the Tournament: Madan Vishwanath­an (Rebels).
