Student ends life in Malad after he fails to score well in engg exams

A 20-year-old engineering student committed suicide on Wednesday evening by jumping from the refuge area of seventh floor of a posh building in Malad (west) after he failed to score well in his exams. Kabir Chamelia was first year student of an engineering college in Vileparle.

The police have not recovered any suicide note from the scene.

“He was reeling under depression after he failed to score well in the engineering exams. He was worried about his future. He lived with his parents and a younger brother on the tenth floor of Rustomjee Ozone building of Malad (West). His father is a businessman,” said Sudhir Mahadik, senior inspector of Malad police station.

His father runs a factory in Charkop.

An officer from Malad police station said that his father spoke to Chamelia at 11:30 am and he appeared normal. “Chamelia told his father that he will reach the factory soon and will come with lunch for him. His father told us that Chamelia had normal conversation with him,” said the officer.

Chamelia’s mother and younger brother were at home the time he took extreme step. “His mother told us that Chamelia packed the lunch for his father, stuffed the tiffin box inside the backpack and stepped out of home at 3.30 pm,” the officer added.

But instead of going down, Chamelia came down from the tenth floor to the refuge area of seventh floor, took off his backpack and jumped from there. His body was found in a pool of blood.

The security guard rushed to the spot after hearing the loud thud. His body was found in pool of blood. The guard immediately informed his mother. Later police, too, were informed.

His body was taken to nearby Siddharth hospital where he was declared dead before admission. Malad police have registered Accidental Death Report and are probing the case.
