Shah Rukh acquires Cape Town franchisee

Shah Rukh Khan and the coowners of Kolkata Knight Riders and Trinbago Knight Riders on Monday came together to own Cape Town Franchisee of T20 Global League, a Cricket South Africa (CSA) initiative.

The new franchise will be called Cape Town Knight Riders, CSA President Chris Nenzai and CEO Haroon Lorgat made the announceme­nt in London. South African batsman J P Duminy has been allotted as the marquee player for the Cape Town Knight Riders. The tournament, will feature eight teams, will be played in November-December. "On behalf of all of us from Knight Riders, congratula­tions to CSA for the launch of new T20 Global League. South Africa is a beautiful country with beautiful people and I really look forward to be part of the exciting new journey and building something special together. We are particular­ly thrilled to make Cape Town and Newlands our new home away from home," said Shah Rukh Khan.

Dev outwits Maanav in final

MUMBAI: Top seed Dev Shroff, ranked No.7 in the country and No 3 in state in the boys under15 category, downed giant-killer Maanav Mehta in the action-packed sub-junior boys singles final in the MCF -All Mumbai 4-Star Ranking Table Tennis tournament, hosted by Mandpeshwa­r Civil Federation at their Sports Complex at Borivali. In a battle of fluctuatin­g fortunes, lefthander Dev outgunned Maanav 43 (11-9, 11-8, 13-15, 7-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-7). Mihika Rohira, the top seed, claimed the sub-junior girls title at the expense of bespectacl­ed Vidhi Shah, but there were moments, when the tie could have gone the other way. However, Mihika controlled her strokes to nicety to win 4-2 (5-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6, 11-9). The salient feature of the MCF tourney, has been the record entries, about 900 - which include the newly introduced doubles events – men’s, women’s and mixed doubles events- after a gap of almost five decades. The MCF have been promoting many sports apart from table tennis. They have been having regular coaching schemes in cricket, tennis, badminton, swimming and table tennis.

MUMBAI: Boys’ under-23 fourth seed Jamal Sakib crashed out, while top seed Abhishek

Agarwal, second seed Anshul Goyal and third seed Sandeep Paswan were forced to battle hard before advancing to the semi-finals, in the Khar Gymkhana-SYSKA Open Squash Tournament, on Monday. Fifth seed Ajit Sharma halted Sakib 11-9, 11-7, 13-11, 9-11, 11-9 in a best-of-five thriller after leading 2-1 and snatching the decider in a tight finish, while 5/8 seed Archita Singh beat third seed Mona Chauhan 11-7, 11-9, 11-9 in another upset of the day, to progress to the girls under-19 semi-finals. Leading 2-1, Abhishek Agarwal endured a surprise challenge before overcoming Anuj Unadkat 13-11, 7-11, 11-2, 10-12, 11-6, while Sandeep Paswan rallied to beat Kunj Rawani 11-6, 1-11, 4-11, 11-9, 11-6 in a pulsating encounter that could have gone either way. Joining competitio­n after a long hiatus, formidabe Rawani squandered a 2-1 advantage when he came chillingly close to grabbing the crucial fourth game and the match. Let off the hook, Paswan seized the opportunit­y and remained ahead to snatch a close decider. Anshul Goyal survived a late scare and bagged the crucial fourth game over extra points to get the better of unseeded Mehul Kumar 11-4, 11-7, 7-11, 13-11 in another exciting finish.

Mixed fortunes for Manushree

INDORE: Manushree Patil, former sub-junior national champion from Maharashtr­a, recovered from her opening round loss to win her second round match, but her progress hinges on her 3rd round performanc­e during the group stages of the women singles in the 11Even Sports National Ranking (Central Zone) Table Tennis Championsh­ips at Abhay Prashad Indoor Stadium on Monday, according to informatio­n received here. After going down 13 to West Bengal’s Priyadhars­hini Das in her first round outing, she struggled to post a 3-2 win over Rajasthan’s Nikita Rautela in the second round.
