Cops seek suspension of rogue bars’licences

- SURESH GOLANI

Stung by repeated violations and indulging in illegal activities by a section of bar owners, the Thane (rural) police has now urged the district collector to suspend performance licenses and decline renewals to orchestra bars who have become infamous for the notoriety in the Mira Bhayandar region.

Immediately after taking charge as Thane (rural) SP last year, Dr. Mahesh Patil has been trying his level best to curb illegal activities including demolition of secret cavities, tab on vulgar, obscene acts and immoral activities in most of the orchestra bars in the Mira Road division.

However, realizing that a large number of orchestra bar owners in the twin city had not only turned into habitual offenders but all of them were running sans updated annual performance licenses, the cops had slapped closure notices to the defaulters.

Consequently all orchestra bars in the region have been forced to shut business since the past couple of days.

Taking their fight against the immoral trade and repeated violations to the next level, the Thane (rural) police has now recommended suspension of licenses issued to such rogue bars.

Meanwhile, seven orchestra bars in the region were booked under the relevant sections of the Bombay Police Act, 1951 for operating their institutions without valid performance licenses, police said.
