- SWAPNIL MISHRA

The demand for the forensic science course has increased this year. The Institute of Forensic Science, Fort has received more applications compared to last year. The director of the college said more than 800 students have applied for this course this time.

Nowadays students are more interested in specialised courses, research, and forensic science courses so that they get good earning opportunities. “Last year 400 students applied but this year the number has doubled to around 800,” said Nitin Deshmukh, Registrar.

The college is governed by the state higher and technical education department, IFSc which offers undergraduate, postgraduate (PG) and PG diploma courses in forensic science offering subjects like toxicology, serology, ballistics, cyber forensics and forensic psychology.

It is the only government institute offering forensic science courses in Mumbai. The other two are in Aurangabad and Nagpur. “Currently, we have 50 seats for B Sc. Our last two batches have started getting good placements offers. As many as 20 of our students are already working in private laboratories,” said Dr. Pratima Jadhav, Director, IFSC.

Students said forensic science course is totally different from other courses. “I was always fascinated by this course and I wanted to make my career in forensic science so I have applied. After doing this course we also have good opportunities in future,” said Shweta Singh, a student.

All application processes have been completed. From Friday, the first merit list will be out. “The admission would be based on the first merit list,” said Deshmukh.

The B Sc (Hons) Forensic Science programme will cover subjects such as criminal law, forensic psychology, forensic chemistry, forensic biology, forensic anthropology and forensic medicine.
