1993 blasts: What awaits Salem, others?

- STAFF REPORTER

Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) on Thursday began its arguments on the quantum of punishment for six convicts in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case.

Deepak Salvi, Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) in this case, argued before the special court designated to hear cases under the Terrorist and Destructive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA).

Salvi apprised special judge Justice Govind Sanap about the gravity of the 12 blasts that shook the city on March 12. 1993. He highlighted the fact that the blasts had killed 273 people and injured nearly 713. He also pointed out at the loss of property that happened due to the blasts.

The special court was urged by the agency to consider this ‘loss’ while deciding the punishment for Abu Salem and five other convicts in this case.

The SPP also cited several judgements passed by the Supreme Court, wherein the apex court has awarded death sentence to the convicts in various cases.

Referring to the judgements, Salvi sought maximum punishment for all the convicts in this case.

Salvi would continue arguing on the quantum of punishment for each of the convicts on Friday. He would be dealing with the roles attributed to the convicts and also by highlighting the charges that were confirmed by the special court against them.

The matter has been adjourned for further hearing on Friday.
