26 MBMC personnel suspended

- SURESH GOLANI

Cracking the whip on erring poll personnel, Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) chief .Naresh Gite has suspended 26 officials, including 10 municipal school teachers, for not carrying out election duties for the upcoming civic polls scheduled to be held in the first week of August.

With the prime objective of enhancing the voting percentage by bringing a totally error-free and authenticated electoral roll, the civic machinery has embarked on a mission since May. The mission is to ensure proper preparedness ahead of voting for the elections to take cognizance of each application for addition, deletion or correction of voters’ names and other details as there have been several cases in the past which led to chaos on the voting day when people were unable to vote as their names were found missing.

Trained to use TrueVoter, a mobile application of the state election commission, the MBMC had designated officials to conduct door-todoor verifications and to authenticate names of voters through the app using GPS.

The exercise envisages an extensive survey of existing voters, check dual entries and deletions due to migrations and death among others.

However, 26 personnel had been evading their responsibilities and Gite passed their suspension orders.

Not ruling out more suspension of erring personnel, an official said, “Updating electoral rolls is an ongoing process, it’s our duty to keep it healthy and flawless. No dereliction will be tolerated.”

The process is on to add new voters who have enrolled themselves before June 5 and the draft electoral roll will be published on June 25 to which suggestions and objections will be will be received till July 1. The final electoral roll is expected to be published by July 7 after necessary corrections.
