FYJC admissions date will not be extended

- RONALD RODRIGUES Mumbai

The cut-off date for the First Year Junior College (FYJC) admissions will not be extended as over two lakh students have already registered and applied online. Though the website was shut for a day for maintenance and faced errors even after it resumed, students managed to register and the state education department stated that the deadline of June 27, for admissions will not be extended.

After the parents and students complained to the state education department regarding the errors faced while filing online applications, the deadline was expected to get extended as many students could not register. The education department refuted saying that over two lakh students have completed the process. Rajendra Ahire, assistant deputy director of education, said, “After the day of maintenance, we have not received any complaints about errors in the online admission process. The deadline will not be extended as the website is functioning accurately. We are expecting another 4,000 to 5,000 applications.”

While in the degree college admission process, the students have filled multiple admission forms for different courses in a particular college. The students said the hike in the cut-off percentage after the first merit list was out has intensified the competition. When these students get admissions in more than one courses they tend to withdraw their admission from a particular course and secure their seat in another programme.

The college authorities believed that students should not fill multiple forms but rather decide on a specific course and apply for the same. Gomathi Iyer, Vice Principal of NM (Narsee Monjee) College, said, “For some students the college is more important the course. If they know that a particular college is good for commerce they apply for multiple commerce programmes in that college. But this hampers the seats for other students as some secure their seats and then withdraw the admission.”

Also, some amount of the fee is deducted once the admission is withdrawn.
