IN THE COURT Special CBI judge orders Sheena Bora murder accused to be produced before him today

- STAFF REPORTER

Indrani Mukerjea, the main accused in the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora, filed an application in a special court on Tuesday, saying she was beaten up by authorities in Mumbai’s Byculla jail during a protest by prisoners against the brutal assault on an inmate on Friday.

Mukerjea’s lawyer told the court that bruise marks could be seen all over her body after she was assaulted by the jail staff following protests by prisoners over the death of a murder convict, Manjula Shetye.

The special CBI court ordered jail officials to produce Mukerjea before it on Wednesday. Prison authorites have accused Indrani of leading the violent protests inside the jail. Police have registered a complaint against 200 inmates, including Mukerjea, for rioting, assault and mischief.

On Tuesday, Indrani’s lawyer Gunjan Mangla agreed with his client’s version of the incident. “I visited Byculla prison as I was informed by Indrani that she was beaten up… She even showed me the bruise marks and injuries she sustained.” Indrani claims that she was also verbally abused by the jail staff and the prison super even threatened her with sexual assault for leading the protests.

Indrani’s lawyer told the court that his client feared for her life in jail and that she wanted to lodge a complaint against the authorities in court. Gunjan Mangla also said that there were many inmates who would like to make statements of the events before the court.
