MBMC nails banners to trees

- SURESH GOLANI

Waking up to its responsibility towards the protection and preservation of the environment, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has embarked on an ambitious “Go Green, One PersonOne Tree” project to increase its green cover.

“To ensure the success of the week-long mission, MBMC’s ‘tree authority’ has swung into action by launching a massive advertising campaign in the form of banners urging local social organisations and individuals to support the initiative by promoting tree plantation on a large scale between 1 to 7 July.

However, the cosmetic efforts and glaring insensitivity of the civic administration towards the environment was exposed when a number of huge flex banners (mounted on wooden frames) were found to be mercilessly tacked to trees.

More shockingly, a couple of banners have been installed near the gates of the main administrative building of the corporation in Bhayandar (west). This is apparently by hammering nails into the tree trunks and also chopping off their branches for better visibility.

"When the civic body itself flouts rules endangering the natural beauty of the region by putting up eye-sore banners, how would it tame others,” wondered former municipal corporator and social activist Rohit Suvarna.

Apart from posing a serious threat to pedestrians and motorists, these arbitrarily installed hoardings are not only defacing the region but also seriously damaging trees, which are considered as the natural lungs for human habitation.
