CONSTRUCTION WILL BEGIN POST MONSOON
MUMBAI: The on-ground construction work of Metro III (Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ) car depot at Aarey Colony in the western suburbs is set to begin post-monsoon. Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) on Thursday said the depot designated within 25 hectares will cost Rs 328 crore.
The final civil works contract is awarded to Delhi-based construction company Sam (India) Builtwell Private Limited which has previous experience in construction of such depot for Delhi and Lucknow metros. The planning of the car depot is going on as the plan was revised and the contractor will begin physical construction at Aarey after monsoon.
Construction work will include formation or earthwork and development of depot area, about 2-km-long RCC boundary wall, about 2.5 km storm water drains, diversion of 1,100 metre Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) water mains (1200 mm diameter), rainwater harvesting system, effluent system plant, sewage treatment plant, buildings and sheds for train maintenance facilities and vehicular underpass.
It also includes preparatory work such as ground preparation and cutting or transplantation of trees, facilities such as operational control centre, administration and training school and depot station. SK Gupta, director (projects) of MMRC, said,“Around 70% of the area will be open and only 30% will be paved so that we can facilitate groundwater recharge. We have revised the plan to save some part of the land.” Construction work of the depot designed for 35 rakes of eight cars will be completed by March 2021.
