For the safety of commuters and women in particular, the Central railways has taken an extra step to ensure that they have more light. The Central railway authorities have replaced more than ten thousand conventional lights at railway stations with power- saving Light Emitting Diodes (LED). These LED lights would help in providing better illumination and save cost on electricity.

The work of replacing the metal halides (conventional lights) with LED lights have been completed at 34 railway stations on both main line and Harbour line. The remaining work of replacing the lights at 17 railway stations is in progress. The authorities said that the work would be completed by August.

The Central railway officials said that these LED lights have the capacity to save cost on electricity up to Rs35 lakh on a yearly basis. The officials also said that the lights provide better illumination on the station premises. “The illumination is measured in lux. The LED lights provide 80 lux of brightness and the metal halides provide at least 50 lux of brightness,” said a senior Central railway official.

These lights would be replaced at station premises and the lobby and entrance area of the railway stations. At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSTM), there are at least 1,400 LED lights installed at both concourse area and platforms.

The total cost of installing these lights have been estimated at approximately Rs 3 crore. The officials said that the LED lights lasts longer as compared to the conventional lights.

“The LED lights can be used for more than four years. Their maintenance level is lesser as compared to conventional lights and can save energy upto 20 percent,” added the official.
