Inmate kills another with stone at Pune’s Yerwada jail

In a shocking case, an inmate stoned another to death in the Yerwada Central Jail in Pune on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased, Sukhdev Meghraj Mahapur (43), was jailed for three years for kidnapping and was in jail for the last seven months. The accused, Dinesh Dabhade (35), is serving life imprisonme­nt for a murder and has been in jail for the last three years. He belongs to Goregoan Mumbai.

Mukund Mahajan, police inspector, Yerwada police station, said, “The victim Mahapur was writing a letter at the open space in the jail. Inmates who are in jail for serious crime like murder are generally kept in barrack but are left open for a few hours of a day as per rule. During the hours, victim was writing a letter and another inmate was dictating him.”

He added, ‘’The accused hit the head of the victim from behind with stone at around 10.30 am in the morning. He died at the spot. He was taken to the hospital for post mortem and the post-mortem report confirmed that he died due to head injuries.”

He added, “We have three witnesses including the one who was dictating letter to the deceased. We cannot arrest the accused who is in the jail for the crime of murder, without permission of the court that sentenced him, Maharashtr­a secretaria­t and jail administra­tion. The procedure to arrest him has begun and once we receive all the permission­s we will arrest him.”

Ashok Kadam, police inspector, crime, Yerwada police station, said, “The accused Dinesh Dabade and the victim Sukhdev Meghraj Mahapur are roommates and staying in the barrack. They had quarrel over some issues in the jail kitchen eight days ago.”

Meanwhile, one of the officials on the condition of anonymity said the murder took place in the barrack where no weapons are allowed.
