BMC won’t collect waste from hotels

- SWEETY ADIMULAM

The city of Mumbai is known for its glamorous world and immense career opportunities for one to make his own identify. Therefore everybody gets glued to the city to fulfill their ambitions. Wherein the city is observing a rise in the per centage of population, at the same time the municipal civic body is finding it difficult to fulfill the citizens needs and demands they looking for. One such example is of city’s waste management. The entire city generates everyday 8,600 metric tonnes of waste. Though the civic body is trying hard to resolve the issue by upgrading the waste management plants by calling tenders and by amending the Municipal Civic Corporation laws related to waste management, still the corporation is far way behind to achieve the standards as compared to other cities of the states and countries.

Out of the various findings the civic body has undertaken till now, the recent one they have come up with is, the initiative for not lifting bulk generator waste which usually comes from big housing societies, hotels and restaurants, and commercial complexes. They have issued a circular informing bulk waste generators to compost their waste in-house itself.

Interestingly the civic body is informing all bulk waste generators about this new development, but there are hotels who have already taken up the project by themselves. According to the civic officer of Brihanmumbai Municipal Ccorporation( BMC), Taj Lands End of Bandra is among the one who took up the compost project without waiting for civic body intimation.

The officer said, “From last three months the Taj Lands End of Bandra one of the top ranked hotel of the city, composts their wet waste inhouse itself. Everyday the hotel generates 2,500 kg of waste. Out of 2,500 kg of waste 1,500 kg is their dry waste and the remaining 1,000 kg they compost through the Organic Waste Converter system (OWC). Which they have installed in their hotel premises.

Through OWC they get 30 to 40 per cent of compost which they utilise it for the hotel gardens.

“Soon we realised if Taj Lands End can compost their waste why not others. As it can eventually help the corporation to some extent. Therefore a circular has been issued and also the centre under their Swacch Bharat Mission informed civic bodies to not pick waste above 100 kilograms,” said the civic officer.

The civic body has decided to start the move from the day of birth anniversary of father of nation Mahatma Gandhi. That is from October 2, the move would be implemented. Same day when the centre started the Swacch Bharat Mission. The hotels and housing societies have shown willingness to compost waste inhouse. J W Marriott of Juhu, Novotal hotel, Sea Prince’s hotel are other high profiled hotels of Mumbai city who have showed positive approach towards the corporation move. And soon every hotels will install OWC is what the BMC expect.

If fails to compost wet waste BMC will take action against those:

“If big residential complexes, hotels commercial buildings who generates more then 100 kgs of waste and fails to compost their wet waste then BMC has the right to cut the water and electricity supply,” said Vijay Balmwar, Deputy Municipal Commissioner of BMC.
