After getting notice, FTII student evicted from hostel

- STAFF REPORTER

A Film and Television Institute of India 2011 batch student has accused the institute of evicting him from the college hostel in an inhuman way and illegally. He has said that his final film project is not complete and hence he is still a student of the institute and the institute cannot evict him legally.

However, the administration says that the student did not leave the hostel despite serving him notices. As per the administration, his diploma is over and he is no longer a student of the institute.

Abhinay Kashyap, 2010-11, editing student, said, “I was home in Mumbai last week as my leg got fractured. During that time, the administration threw out my luggage from room no S22 without informing me. When I told the director that it was inhuman and illegal he said that he has evicted me illegally. I have not completed my final diploma film and thus I am still a student of the institute. Hence, the administration cannot evict me legally.”

However, Bhupendra Kainthola, director, FTII, said, “Students are expected to leave the campus on completing their project and this student has completed his course in May 2017. Despite three notices to the student he did not leave the campus and we were not left with any option but eviction. We have photographed and videographed the incident.”

Kashyap added, “We need to shoot a film as our final project to complete the diploma. The institute assigned a sound department student who has no skills of sound designing. Though I completed my film on time, the sound given to the film is of bad quality. The film I have done for my diploma is not complete as it needs sound work. And as I am still student I can stay in the hostel. I had asked the institute to assign me a pass out student who was willing to work on my film. However, the institute refused to shell out Rs 25000 for a pass out student for sound work.”

However, Kainthola said, “His film is complete and thus he is not longer an institute student. Besides, we had assigned him a sound person after asking him. He is the one who did not complete his diploma film on time despite all warnings and all assistance by the institute. He is known as an indisciplined student on the campus. As his course is finished he cannot stay in the hostel.”

He also said, “His leg is fractured now but when we first sent him an eviction notice he was fine. Thus, he cannot accuse the institute that he was treated inhumanely. All students of his batch left the hostel after finishing their film project.”
