City hosp’s poor infrastructure may spread diseases
The weather changes have yet again taken a toll on citizens. Cases of various diseases have been on the rise in the city due to which hospitals are getting a large number of patients for treatment. But, patients admitted in civic-run hospitals are facing several problems due to the careless attitude of the hospital administration.
The infrastructure of Mahatma Jyotibai Phule Hospital is in extremely bad condition where chunks of plasters and concrete fall from the roof and the windows of the wards are broken from where the rain water seeps in. “The hospital should be repaired as there are cracks in the walls and concrete falls from the roof. Most of the time we have to clean the mess when it collapses due to which we have requested the administration to undertake urgent repairs,” said a peon, who works in the hospital.
Patients are not able to sleep as windows are broken due to which mosquitoes enter the wards and patients with different diseases are kept together which is a risk factor for other patients. “When it rains heavily, the hospital administration has to temporarily shut down the operation theatre because of leakage. The patients suffering from dengue, malaria, leptospirosis, diarrhoea and fever are kept together in one ward due to which disease can spread to patients who have normal fever,” said a patient.
He further stated that most of the time doctors are not on rounds for a checkup and they always fear mosquitoes will bite them. The bedsheet is also changed once a week. “Though we get food on time doctors come only once a day for a routine check-up for more than 50 patients. Most of the time doctor asked us to get the medicine from outside as they do not have them in their hospital medical store,” said another patient.
Despite patients and their relatives, cats and dogs also roam inside the wards and hospital premises due to which patients are scared. “All possible attempts were made to stop cats and dogs from entering the premises and wards. But, patients’ relatives sleeping in the lobby offer them food due to which they come back and keep roaming inside the premises,” said a senior official of Kings Edward Memorial Hospital.
