The Solid Waste Management (SWM) department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has conducted a three day exhibition on waste composting in Andheri municipal office from June 21-23. Nearly 45 Indian companies have participated showcasing varied technologies regarding how to convert waste into compost within few hours.

Excel Industries Ltd, one of the participants in the exhibition have the facility to pick up the waste from the hotels and residential complexes. Vrushank Karnataki, executive officer of the company said, “We are service providers basically like we have mobile vans through that we can collect the garbage from door to door and within few hours the waste can be converted into compost there itself.”

“However, we require an additional area where the compost material can be kept for more 10 days for the curing process. Which will add nutrient values to the compost,” he further added.

Another company, Sustainable Resources, specialised in vermicomposting, waste water recycling, rain water harvesting, and organic terrace farming has also displayed a waste converter machine, which gives the output immediately.

Cassandra Viegas one of the executive officer of the company said, “We have waste management converters starting from 50kg up till the maximum requirement of the clients. If waste of 50 kg is put in the converter then it produces 10 per cent compost. The cost of the waste composting converter varies like for example to manage 50 kg waste it will cost around Rs. 3.75 lakh excluding tax.”
