Now, Bhatsa lake nears overflow limit
There is some relief for Mumbaikars as heavy rains across Maharashtra and catchment areas have major lakes brimming with water. Of the seven lakes, now Bhatsa lake has reached its capacity level and will soon overflow.
Earlier, Modak Sagar and Tansa lakes overflowed due to a good amount of rainfall observed by the city in the past few days.
The maximum capacity limit of the lake is 142 metre and the water level reached to 136 metres on Saturday. Now, the water stock in all seven lakes has improved and has crossed 10 lakh million litres, which means there is enough water stock for the city for the remaining 266 days. “As the water level has reached the maximum limit five doors of the lake have been opened,” said an officer from the hydraulic department of the civic body.
The city gets 3,750 million litres of water daily from seven lakes/dams located in neighbouring Thane district — Modak Sagar, Tansa, Tulsi, Vihar, Middle Vaitarna, Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa lakes.
