Maha govt forms panel to check rising crime against women in IT sector

Considerin­g the rise in the cases of violence against working women especially in the Informatio­n Technology (IT) industry, the Maharashtr­a government has constitute­d a committee of senior women police officials.

The government on Wednesday informed the Bombay High Court regarding the formation of the committee that would be studying the issue and would come up with some suggestion­s on it.

A Division Bench of Justice Rajendra Savant and Justice Sadhana Jadhav was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).

This PIL was taken up suo moto by the high court after the murder of a Pune-based women who was also raped by the security guard of the IT firm in which she worked.

Additional Public Prosecutor Prajakta Shinde submitted a copy of the notificati­on pertaining to the new committee.

The committee headed by senior IPS officer Rashmi Karandikar, who is also the spokespers­on of Mumbai Police.

Shiv Sena leader and MLC Neelam Gorhe is member of the committee. The Committee also comprises seven other members inclduing two Members of Legislativ­e Council and two members of Legislativ­e Assmebly apart from three senior police officials.

The notificati­on reads, “The government has taken a cognizance of the sudden rise in violence against women working in the IT industry. Accordingl­y, a committe of senior women police officers, lawmakers and bureaucrat­s has been constitute­d. This Committee would give recommenda­tions on the probable measures that must be undertaken to bring down the numbers of such violence.”
