Maha govt forms panel to check rising crime against women in IT sector
Considering the rise in the cases of violence against working women especially in the Information Technology (IT) industry, the Maharashtra government has constituted a committee of senior women police officials.
The government on Wednesday informed the Bombay High Court regarding the formation of the committee that would be studying the issue and would come up with some suggestions on it.
A Division Bench of Justice Rajendra Savant and Justice Sadhana Jadhav was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).
This PIL was taken up suo moto by the high court after the murder of a Pune-based women who was also raped by the security guard of the IT firm in which she worked.
Additional Public Prosecutor Prajakta Shinde submitted a copy of the notification pertaining to the new committee.
The committee headed by senior IPS officer Rashmi Karandikar, who is also the spokesperson of Mumbai Police.
Shiv Sena leader and MLC Neelam Gorhe is member of the committee. The Committee also comprises seven other members inclduing two Members of Legislative Council and two members of Legislative Assmebly apart from three senior police officials.
The notification reads, “The government has taken a cognizance of the sudden rise in violence against women working in the IT industry. Accordingly, a committe of senior women police officers, lawmakers and bureaucrats has been constituted. This Committee would give recommendations on the probable measures that must be undertaken to bring down the numbers of such violence.”
