Elderly woman’s skeleton greets son on return from US

-

In a spine chilling case, abuse of a senior citizen in the city has come to the fore with the Mumbai police recovering a decayed body of 63-year-old woman Alka Sahani in her Oshiwara apartment on Sunday afternoon.

Her lone son Rituraj Sahani, in his 30s and a software engineer in the USA, last contacted her in April 2016.

The incident has come as a shocker for everyone in Lokhandwala complex of Andheri (West) where the elderly woman was staying alone in the apartment after the demise of husband Kedarnath.

The clothes on her body were intact but her body has completely decayed.

“There was no conversation between the motherson duo in the last more than one year. Her son came down to Mumbai from the USA on Sunday and rang the doorbell. When no one responded from inside the apartment, Rituraj called a duplicate keymaker and unlatched the door, which was locked from inside,” said zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Paramjit Singh Dahiya.

Police have ruled out any sign of robbery.

The Oshiwara police have sent her body to Cooper hospital for post-mortem to ascertain the exact date and the cause of her death.

However, her neighbours said that they did not smell any stench in the air in surrounding areas.

“During their last conversation, the mother told her son that she does not want to stay alone and want to go to an old-age home,” added Dahiya.

An accidental death case has been reported at Oshiwara police station and further investigations are underway.
