MU struggling to declare results, deadline now Aug 31

- RONALD RODRIGUES

Major examination results were supposed to be declared this week by the Mumbai University (MU). Yet, over 1.2 lakh answer sheets are pending to be assessed with over 60 results yet to be announced. In addition, the examiners will go on leave on account of the Ganeshotsav starting from August 25, which is further going to delay the assessment process.

In the last one week, results of major examinations like Bachelor of Arts (B.A., Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), Bachelor of Management Studies (B.M.S.), Master of Management Studies (M.M.S.) and Engineering were declared but still Commerce and Law courses are pending. In fact, large number of papers are pending to be assessed in these two courses. In the commerce course alone, there results of 27 examinations are pending while more than 1.17 lakh answer scripts of Commerce (including Institute of Distance & Open LearningIDOL) are yet to be assessed. While in the Law course, results of 10 examinations are left.

Considering the upcoming holidays due to Ganeshotsav an assessment loss of 25,000 to 30,000 is bound to happen. A senior official of the university said, “Even if the teachers are on leave for the first three to five days of the Ganeshotsav, around 30,000 answer scripts will be in the back log of the assessment process.” While this time, assessing papers during Ganeshotsav holidays is not mandatory for the teachers but the teachers can volunteer to assess the papers if they wish as per the university.

The new acting in-charge director, board of examination and evaluation Arjun Ghatule had told the free Press Journal that major results would be declared in his week. And after Commerce course like Arts, Science and Technology are major examination as it has large number of students. Till now in Arts only five results are pending, in Science eight results and in technology 15 results are pending.

The activists and student leaders have appealed to all the students to demand their answer sheets once they are evaluated to check if it is done correctly. Sachin Pawar, President of Student Law council, said, “The assessment may not be done correctly due to this last minute hurry so we appeal to students to demand their papers on email.” While, Anjali Damania, an activist said, “Each and every student who gets his or her result should as for their papers so that they know exactly how their papers are evaluated.”
