GRP nabs a gang of four robbers from Jharkhand

The Government Railway Police (GRP) unit of Mumbai Central busted a gang of four robbers from Jharkhand on Saturday. These robbers targeted crowded places like railway stations to commit crimes. This gang who arrived in the city on the first day of Ganesh festival robbed mobile phones and pick-pocketed railway commuters on the platform.

On Saturday, a gang of four robbers targeted railway stations like Dadar, Andheri and Borivali stations with an intention to rob valuables from passengers. “The gang of four robbers also included a juvenile. This gang also stealthily pick-pocketed passengers who were waiting for their trains at Dadar terminus,” said a GRP official from Mumbai Central.

At least 12 mobile phones worth Rs 2 lakh and cash worth Rs 9,000 were robbed from the commuters. “This gang usually arrives in the city during festive occasions like Ganesh Chaturthi and Navratri as there is a huge crowd of commuters on the platform who are waiting to board trains to their native places. They arrived in the city with an intention to rob the passengers of their valuables,” added the official.

The GRP Detection Squad of Mumbai Central who were on deployment at Dadar station caught the first accused red-handed while he was pick-pocketing a commuter on Saturday. “We arrested one accused on platform number two of Dadar station while he was attempting to pick-pocket a commuter. The commuters on the platform helped us catch the accused,” said the official.

The three arrested accused have been identified as Karan Mhanto (20), Kundan Mhanto (19) and Rajeshkuma­r Mhanto (20) who are residents of Maharajpur town in Jharkhand. The fourth accused who is a juvenile has been sent to children’s home in Dongri.

The three accused have been arrested under the Indian Penal Code section of 379 for punishment of theft. “We apprehende­d the other three accused with the help of mobile tracking device to track the location of stolen mobile phones. We are yet to ascertain whether the gang has any similar cases registered against them in the past,” said the official.
