Rains push back FYJC admissions by another 2 days

- RONALD RODRIGUES

Students are a bit relieved as they have been given an extra day to apply for First Year Junior College (FYJC) admissions due to the heavy downpour on Tuesday. The students can secure admissions at various junior colleges till 5 pm on August 31 rather than the earlier deadline of Tuesday.

Students and parents were nervous as they could not travel to any college on Tuesday due to the rains and colleges were shut on Wednesday. This extension has come as transportation was not possible and students could not make it to pay fees and submit documents to secure admissions. These students are those who have applied in the final merit round which was the first come, first served round where students could select any college which had vacant seats and could immediately opt for a seat.

This is the last option for the students as a majority of them include those who have not been allotted a seat in any college. A student said, “We were very nervous initially when the rains led to waterlogging in various areas and we could not go to a college. We thought that we have missed the last chance and will now be left without any seat. But we are happy that an extra day has been given to us.”

The admission process is going on for over two months and yet students are still waiting. Rajpal Hande, principal of Mithibai College, said, “The last round is for those students who have not been allotted a seat at all but unfortunately other students are applying too. There are some students who want to cancel their admissions and shift to another college but these cases are clogging the process and adding to the chaos.
