Thane limps back to normal after Aug 29 flood, loss assessment starts

- PRERANA BHARADE

Thane city too received heavy rainfall on August 29 and suffered a huge loss.

Intensity of the rain though was less in the morning of that day, it increased after 4pm and received over 148 mm of rainfall in two hours, between 4pm and 6pm. Water suddenly began to enter homes of people. who were caught unawares and barely had time to save their belongings. Most houses had water logged between 4 and 7 feet.

Days after the flood, people have begun assessing their losses and have been brought to the notice of officials that residents lost most of their electronic equipment, furniture and mattresses in the deluge.

The Thane Tehsildar has now began the panchnama of the loss across the city.

Eight people had also died in the city during the floodwhile many homes have also been washed away incurring heavy losses for the residents.

“Now that the rain has subsided and the rescue operations have almost stopped, we have started a panchnama on the loss. We will record the number of homes affected and the total monetary loss in the deluge. The panchanama will be completed by the coming week,” a district officer said.

Areas like Sambhaji Nagar, Uthalsar, Tembi Naka, Dyaneshwar Nagar, Mahatma Phule Nagar, Wagale Estate, Ghodbunder Road, Chikhalwadi, Kopri and Anandnagar among others were washed away in the deluge.

In the meantime, the Bhartiya Republican Party has demanded that bills for water and electricity be waived off for one year for those homes which were affected by the flood. The party also demanded culpable homicide charges registered against the commissioner and the civic official for the death of the people.

“The corporation has failed in planning of the city leading to the loss. Thousands of people were affected in the deluge. The natural flow of the nullahs is diverted for construction activity leading to floods. The civic officials should be held responsible for the same and case of culpable homicide be registered against them. Similarly, the corporation and power company should waive the water and electricity bills for one year. They should also install new meters free of cost for those residents whose meters are damaged,” said J V Pawar, leader of Bharatiya Republican Party.
