35K workers deployed to clean streets, immersion sites
At the end of the annual 11day Ganesh festival, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has deployed 35, 000 workers to clean up the streets near the 119 immersions spots like Juhu beach, Girgoan Chowpatty and others.
The BMC had also deployed 9,000 staff for the visarjan (immersion day), to manage the huge crowds of devotees.
This year, the civic body collected 90 tonnes of nirmalaya (biodegradable waste) until seventh day of the festival.
A senior civic officer of Solid Waste Management (SWM) department said, “Last year, 200 tonnes of biodegradable waste was collected during the 11 -day festival,
which was later used to produce manure. Similarly, this year too, we shall follow the same process. We are expecting the same amount of bio-degradable waste to be collected. Only 5 to 10 per cent of increase or decrease would be observed in collection.”
He further stated that currently, the workers are busy cleaning the streets and immersion spots in the city. Once the streets, beaches and other immersion sites are cleaned, the entire waste would be measured and thereafter the amount of exact waste collected can be given.
Interestingly, this year BMC Andheri East ward (K/East) officials also distributed small organic manure samples to 6,000 people so that they can use it in their own kitchen gardens.
Devendra Jain, Assistant Municipal Commissioner (AMC) of Andheri East ward, said, “The nirmalaya collected on one and a half immersion day and on other immersion days was compost and samples of the same were distributed on the last day to the visitors.”
On Wednesday till 11 am, a total of 40,572 Ganpati idols were immersed across the city. Of them, 7,034 were mandal Ganpatis and 33,350 were household Ganpatis.
