Bengaluru late on Teacher's day. The 55-year-old editor, of the Kannada tabloid Gauri Lankesh Patrike, was opening the gate to her house, after having returned home in her car when unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants fired at her indiscriminately. Two bullets hit her in the chest, while one hit her forehead and she died on the spot. Going outside the scope of journalism, she stood up for the communal peace through Forum for Communal Harmony and worked towards rehabilitating Naxals to bring them to the social mainstream. Gauri Lankesh also had great interest in literature. Recently, she backed the separate religion status for the Lingayat community. Gauri Lankesh was convicted of defamation in two cases and sentenced to six months in prison and a fine of Rs 10,000. However, the court also granted her bail and allowed her to appeal to a higher court. But the way women suffer at the hands of handful of rogues nothing is safe and it is time to make sure women are safe in Bengaluru. People come to the city in the hope of making their livelihood but repent their action as the culprits roam in the guise of killers.
