Students ‘design’ a new career option

- RONALD RODRIGUES

Students have begun to opt for courses like design, fashion and communication over the usual standard streams of education. Courses like product design, communication and interior decoration have received popularity and students are considering these courses as a career option.

Various educational institutions are providing opportunities for the learning of such courses thus encouraging students to challenge the standard norms of education. Students are constantly encouraged to go beyond and try something different. The students claimed that a thought for design is present in every scenario and if this thought is channelised then the scope is colossal.

Large number of students are developing an interest in courses like architectural design, interior decoration and even luxury brand management, which were never heard of before. Prachi Kagathra, a student, said, “I studied a course about textile design for my graduation and now I am pursuing my post-graduation. I was not clear if I wanted to continue in this field but I have realised that this a scope of career and there are a lot of opportunities in the industry.”

Around 900 students are studying at Pearl Academy, an educational institute at Andheri, which has a number of courses in the field of design, fashion, business and communication. Rucheeta Verma, campus director of the institute, said, “Students are at the center of all our activities. Students need to understand that it is not just about learning design but it is about applying design in every aspect.”

The students believe that such courses are encouraging them not to just think outside the box but go beyond. Prerna Mehra, a student said, “The way we look at education has transformed into a more practical approach. We were always told to think outside the box but why consider the box in the first place? We could just think that there is no box and expand our horizon.”
