Meet Sagar Reddy, who has brought compassion and security into the lives of hundreds of orphans and become a role model for them, all at the tender age of 29.
Sagar was just threemonths-old when he was orphaned. His parents, who had an inter-faith marriage, died in honour killing. After his grandfather’s demise, Sagar was sent to an orphanage. But as the government rule mandates that inmates have to leave the orphanage without any identity or money once they attain the age of 18.
Out of the orphanage with dreams of becoming an engineer but without any money, Sagar came to Mumbai and started doing odd jobs to make ends meet. After saving some money, he managed to secure admission to an engineering college in Chembur and then bagged a job at Larsen and Toubro. But he had a bigger dream to chase. He started reaching out to destitute orphans and launched an NGO ‘Ekta Niradhar Sangh’ in 2010.
Sagar is now a father figure to over 1128 youngsters who are living a settled life. He has also overseen the marriage of 60 girls. At present, his organisation is taking care of 236 young boys and girls – this includes all their needs from accommodation to education to guidance at the various rehabilitation units he has set up. He is funding the entire task with some help from a few sponsors. Reddy has also moved the judiciary seeking rights for orphans, including proper identity and job quota. Recognising his selfless social work, the Keshav Srushti has unanimously decided to give award to Ekta Niradhar Sangh and felicitate Sagar Reddy at Rang Sharda Hall in Bandra on October, 1.
