RTO steps up action against offenders of road safety norms

- KARISHMA RAVINDRAN

The officials of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) registered increasing number of cases including no valid insurance, licence and riding without a helmet during their road safety campaign in the city during a week-long drive conducted between September 18 to 22.

During the drive, a total number of 185 cases from central, western and eastern suburbs of the city were registered against the persons who drove the vehicle without an insurance. At least 103 people were penalised for not using a helmet/seat-belt and for using a cell phone while driving from the same areas.

The RTO officers also registered 86 cases for driving without a a driving licence.

“During the drive, the RTO officers used to stop the vehicle at the traffic signal after they found people not using a seat belt and a helmet while driving their four-wheeler and twowheeler,” said a senior official from transport commissioner office.

The officers also imposed fine up to Rs 200 for not carrying a driving licence or a vehicle insurance and Rs 1000 for not owning the required documents. The officials said that it was a grave offense to avoid carrying a valid insurance certificate while driving a two-wheeler or a four-wheeler.

“In case of any accident, the person will land in a tight spot if he/she fails to hold a vehicle insurance certificate. Due to this, the person will be unable to pay compensation to the victim,” added the official.

The senior officials from the transport division have planned to conduct a meeting with civic body, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and traffic police in order to take action against the offenders of traffic violations in the city.

“Detaining the vehicle of the traffic violators is way to deter them against violating the traffic rules. We need space to detain and park their vehicle in the parking lot. The parking lots in the city are either owned by the civic body or MMRDA. Hence, we will be conducting a meeting with the concerned agencies by next week in order to take action against the traffic violators,” added the official.

Detaining the vehicle of the traffic violators is way to deter them against violating the traffic rules, say police officers.
