Paper missing case: MU to give students average marks

- RONALD RODRIGUES

Students will be awarded average marks on the basis of their performance in other subjects. Over 100 students thronged the Mumbai University (MU) Kalina campus on Wednesday as they were clueless about their unannounced results. This chaos erupted after the MU announced that it would award average marks to 1,600 students as the university has misplaced their answer scripts but how the average marks would be calculated was unknown.

A majority of students are not aware about this decision of average marks. Secondly, the students are in a fix on what basis will the average marks be decided. A student said, “How will we be given average marks? Does it mean we will just get passing marks in the subjects of which our answer scripts are lost?”

While, the MU claimed that the average marks would be calculated considering the marks scored by the student in other subjects. Devanand Shinde, acting Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the MU, told the Free Press Journal, “The average marks would be calculated as per the average of the marks secured in remaining subjects of which the assessment is completed. Therefore, a student who has secured first class will get marks first class while those who have failed will fail.”

Also, students stated several cases like their results are held in reserve, will be announced later and their gazette showing that they are marked absent. Omkar Samant, a student of Bachelor of Accounting and Finance (B.A.F.), said, “I have no clue what is happening with my result. A university official told me that one of my answer script is unchecked and not misplaced. I do not know when they will finish checking the pending answer scripts.”

Many students do not know if their answer scripts are misplaced or pending to be evaluated. “We do not know if our papers are lost or yet to be checked,” a student added.

Kunal Sharma, a student of Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.), said, “It has been one year and I am still waiting for my result.” Some students are also struggling with the reevaluation.
