Civic body takes steps to prevent city potholes

-

The digging of roads by various agencies for trenches like to put gas line connections, electricity wires, water pipelines at different times on the same roads, creates a lot of inconvenience for pedestrians and motorists and also the quality of the road degrades.

Therefore, now the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to allot permission to all such agencies at a time to avoid potholes on roads.

A senior civic officer said that all agencies who want to carry out work on a particular road will not be given permission separately but all would be allowed to carry out their work turn by turn without digging the road at different times.

For the current year, BMC has received around 6,000 applications from various agencies for digging trenches. To make the procedure easy all the process has been made online.

The civic officials said: “From receiving application till granting permission and informing them, all is through the online medium for which a special software has also been developed and training of the software is given to all concerned officers of 24 wards of Mumbai.”

In addition, to get permission for trenches the concerned agencies should approach the respective wards.

But if at all on the roads where a digging is already being done by some other agency and another agency wants to dig the road for carrying some important repair work then permission for such would be given by the civic commissioner Ajoy Mehta and not by the ward officials.
