Shiv Sena corporators go against BMC on bulk waste

- STAFF REPORTER

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is forcing all bulk generators like housing societies, commercial complexes and hotels to segregate their waste and make compost. This rule is compulsory for those who produce 100 kilogram and above garbage on their premises.

The residents have begun segregating waste, but are finding it expensive to set up their own composting machines. The BMC has not come forward with any proposal or alternatives.

The BMC meanwhile has ordered sweepers not to collect waste from these complexes which do not have compost machines. This has led to immense anger among citizens. Sensing this anger, the ruling party Shiv Sena and other party corporators have slammed the move of the civic body in the standing committee meeting.

Sena corporators accused the officials of forcing residents to imple- ment the order promptly without understanding their pleas. Mangesh Satamkar, Sena corporator remarked, “If any of the citizen moves court then BMC would fall on their face. As no such act or provision is available which can force them (bulk generators) to compost their waste as it is the obligatory duty of BMC.”

He further said to the civic administration officials that if they still want to go ahead with the new plan then they should give some time as waste management is not something which can be implemented overnight.

In addition, he suggested to bring amendment in Act 66(K), 367 and 368.

Ravi Raja, the Leader of Opposition (LOP) of the Congress party in BMC taunted Sena and said, “Being a ruling party Sena would be blamed if the garbage seen lying on road. As BMC has stopped collecting waste, people has been left with no other option but to throw the garbage on road which could be hazardous.”
