Joshi shares lead with sixth seed Patil

MUMBAI: Second-seeded FM Sajandas Joshi and seventh seed Ketan Patil share the lead at the end of the sixth round in the SBI Life FIDE Rating Chess Tournament, and played at the Russian Cultural Centre. FM Joshi was in sparkling form as he played a perfect game to defeat Gopal Rathod from the black side of French defence in 54 moves. Not only did he equalize easily in the middle game but also managed to earn better placements for his pieces. Key Results of (round 6): Gopal Rathod (4.5) Lost to FM S.G. Navy win, but fail to qualify for final

MUMBAI: Defending champions Indian Navy scored a 7-3 win against Mumbai Port Trust in the concluding Super Division match of the MHAL League, at the MHAL-Mahindra Stadium, Churchgate on Friday. But the margin of victory was not sufficient to take through to the final. Indian Navy, Central Railway and Mumbai Customs, all finished with the same number of 17 points in the 9-team league. Central had a superior goal-differenti­al of +17 (goals for 34 and goals against 17), Customs had finished with goal difference of +11 (28 for and 17 against). Navy who started the match today with a goal difference of +6 had to win by a clear six goals margin to pip Customs and qualify for the final. The title deciding match Central Railway and Mumbai Customs will be played on Monday, November 13 at 4.00 pm.

Rajdhani Royals rally to down Maverick Aces

MUMBAI:

Rajdhani Royals launched their campaign on a winning note as they clinched a narrow 3-2 win against Maverick Aces in the opening round match in the 3rd edition of the NSCI Badminton League (NBL), at the NSCI Badminton courts on Friday. In a match, Royals won the first rubber with Sandeep Dillon & Nikhil Bansali defeating the Mavericks pair of Ravi Panjabi & Sanket Gandhi 23-21, 21-11. Royals were unable to sustain the winning momentum as Priyanka Haria

& Mayur Saraf lost the second rubber to Hamie V & Samia Shah 17-21, 21-19, 14-15.

NBA, Mastan YMCA in mini semis

MUMBAI: Nagpada Basketball Associatio­n (NBA) and Mastan YMCA ‘A’ registered convincing wins to advance to the mini boys’ semi-finals, in the NBA Basketball Tournament, at the Bachoo Khan Municipal playground, Nagpada on Friday. NBA crushed Koya’s Academy 64-11, while Mastan subdued Indian Gymkhana 55-7 in one-sided encounters. Don Bosco lit up the competitio­n when they beat Andheri YMCA 56-54 in a exciting men’s tie. After leading 14-11 in the first quarter, Don Bosco fell behind 2629 at half-time and changed the script in the second half after enduring a stiff challenge in a contest that could have gone either way. Dominic Savio also registered a narrow 31-24 win over 360 Life Changer in a women’s match.

Goveas, Kadhe given wild cards in ATP Challenger

MUMBAI: A strong, competitiv­e field, led by former top 100 player and top seed Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia and second seed Moldavia’s Radu Albot along with last year’s runner-up Prajensh Gunneswara­n and all the leading India players will be seen in action during the US$ 50000 4th KPIT-MSLTA ATP Challenger, to be conducted by MSLTA in associatio­n with PMDTA at the Mhalunge-Balewadi Tennis Complex in Pune from November 13-18. Sunder Iyer, Secreatary, MSLTA mentioned that Mumbai youngster Aryan Goveas and Arjun Kadhe from Pune are two players from Maharashtr­a who have been given wild card entries for the event. The 19-year-old Aryan, is the highest ranked player from Maharashtr­a at 679 and Arjun is currently ranked 767. Jayesh Pungaliya, Dhruv Sunish, Siddhant Banthia, all from Maharashtr­a and Suraj Prabodh of Karnatak have received wild cards for the qualifiers which will be held on November 11 and 12.

Record 4000 entries for YMCA Open Athletics MUMBAI:

A record number of 4000 entries including some of the state’s top athletes will be vying for top honours in the 42nd Bombay YMCA State Level Annual Athletic Meet, to be held at the University Stadium, Marine Lines, from November 15 to18. Over 130 events are included in the meet for men, women, boys and girls in various age groups as well as for men and women athletes in the plus 35 and plus 45 age groups.
