ACCUSED’S CDRs BEING STUDIED, MORE ARRESTS LIKELY

- DIWAKAR SHARMA

The prime accused Kalpesh Bagul, his friend Deep Thakur (21) and eight students were produced before Metropolitan Magistrate court in Andheri in connection with the Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) paper leak case registered at Amboli police station on late Thursday night.

Bagul’s counsel argued in the court that no documentary evidence was produced against his client so far.

“Though my client has technical background but no documentary evidence has been produced against him so far,” said Bagul’s counsel.

Bagul is accused of ‘leaking nine papers of BMS and Bachelor of Accounts and Finance (BAF) between November 9 and 16’.

There is one computer per college which has accessed to MU question papers. One and a half hours before every exam MU sends the password to each college to download the question papers, take print out and distribute it among the students.

Bagul, a computer technician at Kandivali-based Nirmala Memorial Foundation College, has been accused of illegally downloading the BMS question papers and distributing these to middlemen who further sold the papers to some students in Rs. 2,500.

The police said one of the students uploaded the leaked question paper on a WhatsApp group having 56 members, all of whom are students. Some of the students, who have been arrested are not students of BMS. But they have been accused of circulating the message on WhatsApp group to help their friends.

The counsels for students argued that the students’ future will be affected as most of them have to take BMS exams on Monday. All the students are between the age group of 20-21 years.

“The mobile phones of the students have been seized by Amboli police. All the required details will be given by the service providers. If the students are sent to police custody their career will be affected because they wont get enough time to prepare for their exams on Monday,” said counsel for one of the students.

Most of the parents, present in the court room, broke into tears after the magistrate remanded all the 10 accused

BUT THEY HAVE BEEN ACCUSED OF CIRCULATING THE MESSAGE ON WHATSAPP TO HELP THEIR FRIENDS.

into one-day police custody. They will be produced before Holiday court in Bandra on Sunday.

“We were hoping that our children will be released today. My son is just the member of the group and he has not circulated any leaked paper,” a visibly upset father told the Free Press Journal.

“We had no prior information that question paper has been leaked and my son has accessed to that leaked paper. He just told us once that he has received some important questions which may be asked in the BMS exam,” a sobbing mother added.

The Call Data Records (CDRs) of all the accused including Bagul’s are being studied to know whom they contacted after the BMS paper was leaked. The Amboli police told the Free Press Journal that more accused, mostly middlemen, are likely to be arrested in the case.
