SIWS make winning start

South Indian Welfare Society (SIWS) College, Wadala defeated Lords Universal College, Goregaon by a comfortabl­y 103 runs in a firstround match of the 8th Saqib Rizvi Memorial InterColle­giate Rotating Trophy Cricket Tournament, organised by the Junior College’s Sports Associatio­n of Mumbai and sponsored by the Rizvi Education Society, at the New Hind ground, Matunga.

Put in to bat first, SIWS College were dismissed for 173 runs with all-rounder Aniket top-scoring with a half century knock of 56 runs.

Defending a modest total, SIWS bowlers spearheade­d by medium pacer Faizan Khan who picked up five wickets for 27 runs from seven overs bundled out Lords College for a measly 70 runs. Shreeraj (3 for 9) and Aniket (2 for 2) shared the other wickets.

Earlier the tournament was inaugurate­d by Arman Malik, Executive Managing Committee member, MCA and Adv. Rubina Akhtar Hasan Rizvi, Director, Rizvi Education Society.

“Thanks to the efforts of the Junior College Sports Associatio­n and the Rizvi Education Society for coming forward to sponsor this tournament, all you youngsters get an opportunit­y to perform well and a chance to play at a higher level.

I encourage you to play hard and play the game in the best sporting spirit. I want all of you to do your best so that you can get into the limelight, but I would also like to advice all you youngsters not to neglect on your education which is very important. I urge everyone to spend equal amount of time with your studies,” Malik advised the young boys.
