- DIWAKAR SHARMA

The Cyber Cell of Mumbai police crime branch has arrested three accused from Jharkhand in vishing call in which a Mulund-based 30-year-old woman was duped of Rs 10,000 early this year.

“During investigation we learnt that the caller is from Jharkhand. A team was immediately sent there and arrested all the three accused. We have collected ample evidence from their possession to convict them in vishing case,” said a senior officer from Mumbai’s crime branch. The police said the trio – Budheshwar Ruplal Murung (22) and Pintu Sanjeev Das (27) are the residents of Dhanbad; and Mukesh Ramchandra Mandal (20) is the resident from Deoghar district – were arrested from their home town in Jharkhand, the state which has emerged as the hotbed for cyber con artists.

According to an officer from Cyber Cell at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) Mandal used to call victims by impersonating as a bank executive and get the details of victim’s debit as well as credit cards.

“After getting card details from victim on phone, Mandal would illegally transfer the money to Murung’s bank account. Das worked as a mediator between Mandal and Murung,” said the officer.

The investigators zeroed down the accused based on the technical evidences and bank account details of the victim. “We first checked to which bank the money was transferred. Based on bank details, we traced the accused and nailed them in Jharkhand as the tower location of the cell phone, which they used to dupe the Mulund woman, was continuously showing it in Jharkhand,” said another officer privy to the investigation.

Multiple cell phones, computer and other gadgets have been seized from their possession.

The Mumbai crime branch brought them to Mumbai after arresting the trio in Jharkhand. They have been booked for impersonation (419), cheating (420) and common intention (34) of Indian Penal Code and identity theft (66 C) and cheating by personation by using computer resource (66 D) of Information Technology Act, 2000. The investigators are probing the number of victims the trio have duped till date.
