SIDDHANT Ganore, a 21-year-old son of a po­lice of­fi­cer, was ar­rested on May 25 in ma­t­ri­cide case by Vakola po­lice from Ra­jasthan af­ter Cy­ber Cell of Mumbai crime branch had kept his per­sonal gmail as well as social net­work­ing ac­counts on sur­veil­lance af­ter he went miss­ing af­ter slit­ting his mother Di­pali’s throat in­side his flat on May 24. There were five stab wounds on Di­pali’s neck and her both the palms were also wounded. Di­pali’s body was found in a pool of blood af­ter her hus­band Dyanesh­war Ganore, re­turned home in Vakola of Santa Cruz (East).

Blue Whale sui­cide case

THE tragic death of school go­ing child, res­i­dent of And­heri (east), was con­nected to a deadly on­line game ‘Blue Whale Chal­lenge’ in July. But the de­bate over rea­son be­hind his tragic death came to an end af­ter a se­nior of­fi­cer ‘ruled out any Blue Whale con­nec­tion’ and said the boy was ‘de­pressed’ af­ter a failed love and had com­mit­ted sui­cide. “The boy has left a sui­cide note in which he had writ­ten that he was end­ing his life due to de­pres­sion. This trig­gered him to slip into de­pres­sion and fi­nally end his life,” the of­fi­cer told the Free Press Jour­nal and cat­e­gor­i­cally ruled out Blue Whale an­gle be­hind his death.

Ban­dra pi­anist’s mys­te­ri­ous death

The mys­te­ri­ous death of a 29-year-old pi­anist Karan Joseph re­mains un­solved in 2017. Iqbal Kaskar chargesheeted

On Septem­ber 18, the Thane anti-ex­tor­tion cell ar­rested Ibrahim Kaskar, the brother of un­der­world don Da­wood Ibrahim and his ac­com­plices Mum­taz Ejaz Sheikh and Is­rar Ali Sayyed for ex­tort­ing Rs30 lakh from Thane-based builder Suresh Jain. On Septem­ber 21, the po­lice had filed a sec­ond First In­for­ma­tion Re­port (FIR) at Thane na­gar po­lice sta­tion against Kaskar, Sayyed and Sheikh for ex­tort­ing money from a jew­eller.

Man­jula Shetye killed in jail

Man­jula Shetye, a for­mer con­vict at the By­culla jail was bru­tally mur­dered in­side the jail on June 23. Jailer Man­isha Pokharkar, con­sta­bles Bindu Naikade, Waseema Shaikh, Shi­tal She­gaonkar, Surekha Gulve and Aarti Shingne, were ar­rested on July 1 af­ter the re­port re­vealed that the con­tu­sions were the cause of death.

Cong Cor­po­ra­tor Mha­tre killed

Manoj Mha­tre, the Congress Cor­po­ra­tor from Bhi­wandi was killed by his cousin Prashant Mha­tre on February 14. The Cor­po­ra­tor was killed by his cousin due to poit­i­cal ri­valry. Apart from Prashant, the other ar­rested ac­cused are Cha­ran­jiv Mha­tre (22), Ra­jnikant Mha­tre (33), Shashikant Mha­tre (30) and Ku­nal Mha­tre (25).Mha­tre was ar­rested by the Anti-ex­tor­tion Cell of Thane Crime Branch, along with four others, on Wed­nes­day. On the night of February 14,Manoj Mha­tre was bru­tally killed at his build­ing com­pound. Bul­lets were fired at him, and he was also as­saulted with a sharp weapon.

11 held in Bank of Bar­oda heist

On Novem­ber 11, the rob­bers car­ried out a heist at Bank of Bar­oda at San­pada in Navi Mumbai.30 lock­ers were tam­pered and gold jew­ellery worth Rs 3 crore was stolen. The mis­cre­ants had en­tered the bank by dig­ging a 25feet tun­nel across five shops to break into the locker room. The da­coity took place at Sec­tor 11 at plot num­ber 6 near Juina­gar rail­way sta­tion. The in­ci­dent came to light on Monday morn­ing when the bank re-opened and a staff mem­ber and cus­tomer found the lock­ers in the trea­sury room dam­aged and re­ported the mat­ter to a se­nior.

Rail track 'sab­o­tage'

Four in­ci­dents of ‘sab­o­tage’ on the Cen­tral rail­ways were car­ried out by mis­cre­ants. The rail­way gang­men had found four gelatin sticks placed be­tween the tracks at Pan­vel in Raigad and Kalam­boli in February this year. This in­ci­dent has raised con­cerns of safety and se­cu­rity of the rail­way pas­sen­gers. The spurt in such ac­tiv­i­ties is seen as at­tempt to sab­o­tage the rail­way traf­fic and spread fear.

Ryan mur­der case alarms all schools

Safety and se­cu­rity mea­sures have become a ma­jor con­cern in schools af­ter the in­ci­dent at Ryan In­ter­na­tional School, Gu­ru­gram. A seven-year-old stu­dent of Class 2 was found with his throat slit in­side the school toi­let on Septem­ber 8. This in­ci­dent raised sev­eral al­le­ga­tions against the Ryan Group which man­ages a chain of schools in In­dia. Ini­tially, a bus con­duc­tor was ar­rested of be­ing ac­cused of sex­u­ally as­sault­ing and mur­der­ing the child.
