- SURESH GOLANI

Routinely criticised for failing to make streets safer for women, cops from the Thane (rural) police led by SP Dr Mahesh Patil has set an example for the civilians in their jurisdiction and their counterparts in the state by bagging the top slot for a rare achievement.

They recovered and returned the highest number of stolen items to its rightful owners. Ushering into the new year with a positive note, cops returned ornaments, cash and mobile phones to 34 victims of chain snatching and thefts that had been reported from the twin-city in the past couple of months.

The police managed to crack 34 out of the 56 cases. The valuables were given back to their legitimate owners at the hands of dignitaries including District Collector Mahendra Kalyankar, Addl SP Prashant Kadam, MLA Narendra Mehta, MBMC Mayor Dimple Mehta and Dy Mayor Chandrakant Vaity, at a function held at Maxus Banquet Hall on January 1. Senior Police Inspectors of all six police stations were present on the occasion.

Interestingly, the Thane (rural) has ranked first in the state in respect to restitution of stolen property to its rightful owners. Although the judicial process is lengthy and cumbersome, the police banked upon the provisions in Code of Criminal Procedure to return more than 6,000 recovered movable property including gold ornaments, two wheelers and mobile phones to the concerned complainants after due verification and completion of all formalities.

Most of the victims could not believe their luck at getting back the lost valuables.

“I never thought I would get back my gold chain, my trust in the police has doubled after this,” said a woman while thanking cops for recovering her stolen chain.
