MELBOURNE: Putting up a dominating show,Yuki Bhambri outclassed Spaniard Carlos Taberner to reach the third and final qualifying round of the Australian Open, here on Friday. Bhambri, who is in good nick, routed the world number 183 6-0, 6-2 in the second round of the men's singles qualifiers. The 25-year-old Indian, ranked 122, won 54 points in the 57-minute contest, breaking his rival six times in the match. Bhambri will now fight it out with Canadian Peter Polanksy for a place in the main draw. If Bhambri clears the final hurdle, it will be his third appearance in the Australian men singles main draw. In 2015, as a qualifier, he had lost to Andy Murray in the first round and in 2016 he bumped into Tomas Berdych to make a first-round exit. MUMBAI: Anjali Semwal of Maharashtr­a snatched a sensationa­l comefrom-behind win, while Pooja Arthi of Tamil Nadu rallied late in a 3-2 thriller to storm into the semi-finals, in the 3rd DAIS Moment of Joy Khar Gymkhana Junior Open Squash Tournament on Friday. Leading 20 against Tiana Parasrampu­ria of Maharashtr­a, Pooja Arthi was forced into the decider before snatching a nail-biting 11-6, 11-6, 8-11, 9-11, 119 in a girls’ under-13 quarter-final clash that could have gone either way. Arthi’s win inspired a strong Tamil Nadu posse in the semi-finals with Ashmita Arumugam and second seed Gitanjali Vasudevan joining in. After winning a tight opening game and trailing 1-2, grit and determinat­ion led Semwal to a pulsating 11-9, 5-11, 4-11, 13-11, 11-8 win over Saisha Gupta in a gruelling girls under-15 contest that also could have gone either way. Facing defeat in the crucial fourth set, Semwal’s fortunes changed with a vital 12-11 advantage.

Yuki inches closer to Australian Open main draw TSG Football School in Mumbai

MUMBAI: The Sports Gurukul (TSG), a sporting organizati­on that strives to promote and develop various sports at the grassroots level, has launched a football training school – ‘TSG Football School’, in Mumbai on Friday. Through this new initiative TSG is determined to provide every child with an opportunit­y and platform to choose football as a part of their holistic overall developmen­t. The TSG Football School will conduct their training programs and clinics at the newly laid worldclass facilities at the All India Balkanji Bari ground, Santa Cruz (West). TSG aims on bringing together all facets of football at the grassroots level, with an aim to not only build on football principles — both intrinsic and extrinsic — but also adopt these principles as a way of life. MUMBAI: Siddhant Doshi (60), Ryan Thomas (56 ) alongwith Sumeet Anjalekar (52) featured in Bhosale Cricket Academy’s 35 runs win over Jwala Sports Foundatioi­n XI in the B4S (Brain-4-Sports)- MCC Pro-40 double leg League, played at Oval Maidan here on Friday day. Bhosale CA hit up 290 for five. Chasing 291 for victory, JSF XI batsmen put up spirited display, but they fell short by 35 runs as they were dismissed for 255. For JSF XI, Mahiyuddin Memon (80) and Aryan Chitrodia (78) were their principal scorers. Playing for the first time in the league, Rizvi Sports Club thrashed MCC (Blue) by nine wickets in their opening tie. MUMBAI: Daniel Fernandes and Melvin Barboza, both scored hat-tricks each, which powered J.M.J. Sports Club to a thumping 9-0 win against BEST Arts & Sports Club in a lop-sided Second Division match of the MDFA Leagues 2017-2018, played at the St. Xavier’s ground, Parel. Besides the efforts of Fernandes and Barboza, the other who made contributi­ons towards the big win was Killinger Raunak, Christophe­r Sequeira and Ankit Chavan, all scoring a goal each to complete the winning tally. In another match of the same division, Air India Western Region riding on Sumeet Kuvekar’s lone strike got the better of Utkarsh Mandal by a close 1-0 margin. MUMBAI: Payyade Sports Club defeated Varroc Vengsarkar Cricket Academy by eight wickets in the finals of under 19 Varroc Cup. Opting to field Payyade restricted host team for 171 in 45 overs. Atharva Poojary was wricker-in-chief with top 3 wickets. It wasn't a desire start for Payyade as they were 3 for 2 during their chase. However, an 169 runs unbeaten 3rd Wicket stand between Museer Khan & skipper Divyansh Saxena sealed the the chase. Museer ended with 54* and Divyansh 102*. Divyansh Saxena was awarded Man of the Final as well as the Man of the Series. Atharva Ankolekar got the Best Bowler Award for taking 10 wickets.
