BMC TO CRACK A WHIP ON PROPERTY TAX DEFAULTERS

- SWEETY ADIMULAM

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner (BMC) has recently issued a new circular to take firm action against builders and developers (also slum developers who are property tax defaulters.

According to a senior civic official, earlier the civic corporation would disconnect the water connection of the slum rehab building, however, many a time it has been found that the non-payment of property tax is the liability of the builder or developer but the slum rehab tenants suffer. Therefore, now the saleable building of the slum developer and builder will be sealed. Devidas Kshirsagar, Assessor, and Collector of BMC property tax collection department said, “As per the new circular now the property tax will be recovered by sealing the saleable building of the slum builder or developers and not by disconnecting the water connection of the rehab building. The pending property tax will be recovered by sealing the property until they make the due property tax payment to BMC.”

In addition, the buildings which are newly been constructed and require No Objection Certificate (NOC) from BMC’s building department and P form certificate for water connection will not get until they clear all their property tax bills, the circular copy points out.

This has come after the Sai Nagar real estate builder of Ghatkopar has around Rs. 8crore property tax due for payment to BMC.

It will also take firm action against builders and developers by sealing their saleable buildings
