Human chain formed in Bihar to protest dowry, child marriage

Bihar on Sunday formed a state-wide human chain of 1468 kms as a part of the state government’s campaign against dowry and child marriage.

Over four crore people participated in the human chain which broke the previous record of three crores in Bihar on January 21, 2017 in support of total prohibition of liquor. The formation of the human chain began with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar himself leading thousands of participants at the historic Gandhi Maidan.

The chief minister was accompanied by Speaker of Bihar Assembly Bijay Kumar Chaudhury, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, Road Construction Minister Nand Kishore Yadav and bureaucrats. Large number of school children had also gathered at the Gandhi Maidan.

Ministerial colleagues of chief minister led the human chains at 38 district headquarters, with Darbhanga marked the longest chain with 18 kms followed by Purnia with 14 kms.

Divisional commissioners, district magistrates and SPs led the human chains in their respective areas. Village heads (Mukhyas) led it in their panchayats as the state government had advised formation of human chains even in remote villages.

Former chief minister Jeetan Ram Manjhi joined the human chain near Raj Bhawan and state JDU president Bashistha Narain Singh at Strand Road.
