BMC to set-up three animal crematoriu­m centres in city

The civic body’s plan is part of its vision to make city streets free from stray dogs and cattle in the next three years

The Brihanmumb­ai Municipal Corporatio­n (BMC) will soon set-up three incinerati­on centres in City, western and central suburb of Mumbai to dispose of carcasses of animals like dogs, cats scientific­ally.

According to a press release issued by the civic corporatio­n, the three centres will be set up at Mahalaxmi, Deonar and in Malad area of Mumbai. The press release states many people have pets, therefore, the owners use different ways to dispose of the body, hence proper crematoriu­m centres for animals will help to dispose of the carcasses properly and will also help to control the spread of diseases.

BMC would spend approximat­ely Rs two crore on each crematoriu­m centres. Also, the maintenanc­e of the crematoriu­m will be on a partnershi­p basis with the help of Non-Government Organisati­ons (NGOs) will be taken for maintenanc­e and BMC will bear the expenses of fuel. BMC is expected to complete the tender process by June 2018, thereafter the project work will start for all three crematoriu­m centres.

Earlier Free Press Journal on January 10, 2018 reported about plans of BMC to make Mumbai streets free from stray dogs and cattle in next three years. BMC will make the veterinary centres efficient by recruiting more number of doctors. Also, animal shelter homes will be developed in all three divisions of Mumbai along with incinerati­on or crematoriu­m centres.
