BMC TO RESTART BANDSTAND CULTURE IN SOUTH MUMBAI’S CIVIC GARDEN

The civic body restores the heritage monument on the basis of 1864 photograph­s

The heritage department of the Brihanmumb­ai Municipal Corporatio­n (BMC) is all set to start the South Mumbai cooperage garden's bandstand culture. BMC last year in the month of February undertook the historic monument restoratio­n project work which is all set for completion. According to a senior civic official the restoratio­n work is completed by 80 per cent and remaining 20 per cent will be complete by this month only. Therefore, the bandstand culture is likely to be opened soon.

The heritage department conservati­on restored the heritage monument by taking reference of old photograph­s clicked in the year 1864. Vastu Vidhan is the appointed consultant while Jeernoodha­r is the appointed contractor who undertook the heritage monument restoratio­n work. The civic officer added earlier at ward level random repairs were been held without proper study, the approach was wrong. Therefore, now correct measures been adopted and the restoratio­n work has been taken up by the heritage conservati­on department. It included replacing the wood of the monument with original burma wood, the carving details been replaced also the plinth and the steps have been excavated. Total Rs 60 lakh been spent on the work.

So far only the municipal band artists and navy band are been allowed to perform. While the civic corporatio­n is also of the plan to give entry to private artists who can give good entertainm­ent to the music lovers with their musical band performanc­e. The civic corporatio­n along with restoratio­n work has also installed decorative lamps and has provided electrical socket where one can easily play modern electric musical instrument­s.
